Hippo roller reinvents the wheel

The Hippo Roller, a plastic water tank that can be rolled around thanks to a metal handle, is celebrating its 25th anniversary.

Invented by a South African two-person, engineer and designer, team to help women and children with collecting water in certain parts of the world, the Hippo Roller can hold up to 90 litres of water. While the traditional method of carrying water enabled them to carry up to 20 litres of water per trip, the wheel-shaped water tank enabled them to carry much more water while requiring the equivalent effort of carrying only 10 litres. Additionally, all efforts were made to ensure that the tanks could be rolled over even the roughest terrain. The container is made from a single piece and is very thick, enabling it to withstand trips over rocky trails.

Twenty countries around the world use this barrel with a lifespan of 5 to 7 years, designed by Pettie Petzer and Jogan Jonker. Over 45,000 barrels have been distributed around the world, and over 300,000 people use them every day.
