Lego: the small brick that became an icon
Lego: the small brick that became an icon
In 1949, a Danish carpenter designed small multi-coloured plastic bricks in 2 different sizes which could be stacked one upon the other. The famous building game was born.
Since then, the little brick has had quite a journey!
Originally manufactured in cellulose acetate, the bricks were first fashioned from ABS in 1963, and they have been made from that same material ever since. Lego figurines made their first appearance in 1974 and were soon followed by mini-figurines a few years later.
In 2010, Lego bricks were voted "most popular toy of all time". Lego products are available in 130 countries: 7 boxes of Lego bricks and 983 individual bricks are sold every second throughout the world!
